A very finely carved and presented oak Kist or Coffer. The front with elaborate pillars and oveall the piece  with a rich patina, made from a solid wooden construction, featuring a hinged door with the original key. At some point during the last 400 years, this 18th century French Trunk was converted from a standard top lift to a door access similar to a low buffet, enabling its users to leave objects placed on top even when opening the piece. Wonderfully hand-carved face with a rich patina.
This chest is a truly remarkable and historic artifact. After all, the trunk was the first antique cased furniture, from which all others European antique furniture has evolved!
There are some signs of inactive woodworm to the front of this chest
